Kyle Keck played men's basketball for the 2012-2013 season. He helped lead the Sea Devils to a 19-12 record during his time at CFCC and his hard work earned him the award of Most Improved Player for the 2012-13 basketball season.
After graduating from CFCC in 2013, Keck transferred to Taylor University where he continued his basketball career. Taylor University is in the Crossroads League of the NAIA and is arguably one of the best leagues in the country to play in. Keck came off the bench and played a great role in relieving the team's starters. During his senior season he scored 12 points and had 16 rebounds. Taylor University is home to one of the greatest traditions in college basketball, "The Silent Night Game". In this game the arena is packed with fans all dressed in costumes and crazy outfits. The arena is completely silent until the Trojans score their 10th point of the game, then the crowd erupts, and fans storm the field.
During his last semester at Taylor University, Keck rejoined the men's basketball team as a student assistant coach. "Being able to join a staff that coached me was one of the cooler experiences I've been able to have in my basketball career" says Keck. After graduating with his bachelor's degree in Journalism in 2015 he began coaching at Wheaton College the following year and then at the high school level for five years. He now lives in Naperville, Illinois where he works full-time as a Realtor in the Chicago suburbs for Keller Williams Premiere Properties. He also writes part-time for BucsReport.com (website covering Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Kyle remains involved with basketball by coaching part-time for Oswego East High School, and Mercury Elite AAU. He keeps in touch with former head coach, Ryan Mantlo and other teammates. Kyle credits coach Mantlo and his teammates for helping him achieve the goal of playing at a 4-year university. When asked how his time as a CFCC student athlete helped him with his current career/ life choices he said "CFCC helped me grow up quickly and learn how to be an independent man. I moved to Wilmington not knowing anyone, with my closest family living in FL. I quickly had to adapt to unfamiliar territory and learn how to be a successful student-athlete".
What was your most memorable moment ing back at your time at Cape Fear?
"Being voted "Most Improved Player" by my teammates and coaches. This materialized the hard work I committed to on day one."
If you could tell an incoming freshman one thing what would it be?
"Focus on the reason why you are at CFCC. Find your why and don't let any distractions lead you astray."
What is your biggest accomplishment after leaving Cape Fear? (personal or professional)
"Earning my BA from a Christian university and marrying my best friend!"
