History and Traditions

Mascot

The Sea Devil became associated with Cape Fear Community College in 1970.  A contest on campus encouraged the student body to draw a prospective mascot, and a symbolic Sea Devil was chosen.  But it wasn’t until three decades later, when the Sea Devil design was reconstructed, redesigned and given the name “Ray," did it finally become the official mascot of CFCC.

College Colors

The selection of school colors for Cape Fear Community College - Blue & White - harken back to 1959, when the first students arrived at what was then Cape Fear Technical Institute.  In 1960 the administration asked students for their suggestions on school colors, and in 1962 the colors of blue and white became the school’s official colors.

Flag

Thanks to the interest and support of the Board of Trustees of Cape Fear Community College in 2003, CFCC flies an official flag. The flag’s design and unique colors, symbolizing growth, educational excellence and support of the community, is yet another mark that positively promotes the college.  It provides school spirit at Cape Fear Community College, reflecting the pride of students, staff, faculty, administration, and the community.

Logo

The 2010-11 season marked over 11 years of athletics since its inception in 1999. To commemorate the milestone, CFCC Athletics formally introduced a new, vibrant and contemporary family of logo and word marks. The logo is the third in the school's athletic history, dating back to 1970 when the students chose the Sea Devil to represent their college. This new identity system captures the newly built athletic tradition, unique characteristics and strong appeal of JUCO Athletics in Wilmington, NC. This new visual identity system is inclusive to the College mission, fashionable and exciting.

The primary mark replaced a logo that has been utilized by the department for more than a decade. In addition, the department will continue to use blue and white as its official colors, while utilizing the PMS color navy and light blue as accent colors.

Logo components include:
• A primary mark that features a logo (the new-look Sea Devil), a word mark (Sea Devils) and the respective College name;
• Athletic-specific logo that incorporates both the Sea Devil Mascot and Sea Devil word mark;
• Secondary marks;
• A style manual on proper logo and word mark usage by internal and external constituencies; A customized font package.

We look forward to these marks being well received by students, faculty & staff, alumni, friends and New Hanover and Pender County residents. We believe that this new logo identity system will be long-lasting and continue to foster pride in our existing programs, and programs to come.
