Sea Devils Celebrate Sophomore Night

Wilmington, NC – In their final game of the season inside the confines of the Schwartz Center, the Sea Devils men's basketball team found a unique way to extend their time; overtime.  In OT, Cape Fear was able to hold off Region 10 rival Clinton Junior College, 95-89.

The victory helped the sophomore class cap off an undefeated campaign at home this season, something they are very proud of.  "We take great pride in holding our home court," commented sophomore Cordea Wilson.  "It's something we talk about all the time and hope the freshman class will carry on."  The Sea Devils have won 16 straight home games dating back to last season, and 23 of their last 24.

The contest was close throughout as both teams scorched the net.  Clinton held a 38-34 advantage at the half but CFCC would use a 14-2 run out of the break to take a 48-40 lead just five minutes into the second frame.  Clinton came roaring back to even the contest at 56-56 with ten minutes to go, and both teams traded baskets the remainder of the half.  A lay-up from Calvin Davis with 3 seconds remaining rolled off the rim, sending the contest into overtime.  TJ Evans hit a quick three-pointer and Anthony Vanhook dumped in six points in the overtime session to give the Sea Devils the victory.  The win also sends CFCC into this weekend's tournament riding an eight game winning streak and as the number #1 seed.

Evans and Vanhook both dumped in 21 points apiece to lead the scoring attack for CFCC.  Sophomores Demetres Abrams and Cordea Wilson added 18 and 16 points respectively.

"It's a bitter sweet day today," said CFCC head coach Ryan Mantlo.  You're so happy for these young men on what they have accomplished and who they have become, but it's hard knowing I won't ever coach them on that floor again.  What an unbelievable run they have put together.  There is still unfinished business, but I am just glad to be along for the ride with these young men."
