Sea Devils Cruise in Region Tournament

Pinehurst, NC - In search of a third straight Region 10 Championship, the Cape Fear Community College men's basketball team took one step closer to achieving its goal as the top-seeded Sea Devils used a big push in the first half to break away from No. 5 Clinton Junior College following a 94-67 victory in Pinehurst on Friday afternoon.

"I'm real proud of our effort and execution today," said CFCC Coach Ryan Mantlo. "We look forward to going into battle tomorrow in the hopes of bringing home a title."

Cape Fear took a double-digit advantage with seven minutes to go in the opening period and went on a 7-2 spurt in the waning seconds of the frame to grab a 46-31 lead at the break. Sophomore guard Michael Chambers paced a balanced scoring effort, scoring 12 of his game-high 20 points during the early run.

A couple of shots from beyond the arc extended the Sea Devils cushion to 73-52 with 6:53 remaining as Cape Fear grabbed a three game season sweep over Clinton Junior College. Josh Lindsey drained five treys in the contest to close with 18 points as six players finished in double figures.

Tyrek Coger picked up the scoring in the second half and closed with 14 points, while Alonzo Tyson chipped in with 13.

With a chance to clinch a spot in the National Junior College Championship (NJCAA), the Sea Devils compete in the Region 10 Title game against Spartanburg Methodist at 3:30 p.m. in Pinehurst on Saturday. Cape Fear split a pair of regular season contests against Spartanburg, dropping their final home game of the year, 110-80, to the Pioneers on Feb. 20.
