Men's Soccer Struggles in Loss to Louisburg

Wilmington, NC - Cape Fear men's soccer suffered a loss to Louisburg College 6-1 on Tuesday.

Louisburg was led by James Fergany, who scored four goals in 7th, 15th, 47th, and 52nd minutes to lead his team. Bright Somuah and Jamie Clark also scored for the Hurricanes.

Louisburg scored six straight goals before the Sea Devils got on the board. The goal came in the 69th minute from DaShaun Brown, giving him five on the season, tied most for the team. The goal was assisted by Franco Fernandez.

The Hurricanes totaled 17 shots and eight on target, while the Sea Devils had 10 shots and four on goal.

Despite the loss, the coaching staff had positive things to say about some of the players. Anthoney Garcia-Aguirre was given his first start today, and head coach C.W. Ponton was pleased with his effort.

"He utilized his skill set whenever on the field and I've been pleased with his game play recently and how he embraced his first start."

Coach Ponton also pointed out the play of Josh Barnello, Victor Melo, Esteban Clemente, and Christian Vega for their contributions.

Assistant coach Chris Harper praised Fernandez, stating, "he worked his butt off the entire game and was never an issue with the refs."

All that said, coach Ponton and the staff were disappointed in the team's performance.

"I'm very disappointed in our team this evening," said coach Ponton. "We are a much better side than what was out on the field today. We do apologize for those who saw that poor performance and hope that they will come out to our game this Saturday as we look to redeem ourselves."

While he liked the way some of his players played off the bench, the poor start put them in a bad situation.

"The fact of the matter is we came out too flat against a pristine team. I believe this is a lesson that only needs to be taught once."

Coach Harper echoed Ponton. "We played a very good Louisburg side today, unfortunately we did not play to the best of our ability. We are a better team than the results showed. We look forward to working hard this week and coming back out for Saturday's game."

The Sea Devils drop to 3-2 on the season with today's loss. They will play Saturday, September 23rd at home against USC Sumter. Gametime is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and will be broadcast online. A link to the broadcast will be available at goseadevils.com.
