Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker In Overtime

Holly Springs, NC - Cape Fear men's soccer fell to Wake Tech Community College 2-1 on Monday in overtime.

It was a tough loss for a Sea Devils squad battling a number of injuries. Nonetheless, the coaching staff was proud of the team's effort.

"What can you say about a group of young men whose legs were heavy and many nursing injuries due to playing so many games in a short time span," said assistant coach Chris Harper. "The boys were determined and played with heart. We had our opportunities but unfortunately just couldn't finish."

Head coach C.W. Ponton echoed his assistant.

"I'm very proud of the boys. At no point have I ever seen a team have to push through a schedule like this, but we're doing our best to defy the odds."

Coach Harper was pleased with the efforts of defender Eion Dockery, midfielder Elijah Akins, and forward DeShaun Brown.

"DaShaun was a work horse up top and Eion and Elijah both worked exceptionally to hold the other team and bay."

Coach Ponton loved the effort from his entire team, but also pointed to the performance of Akins.

"It was a great team effort, but if I had to pick a player that stood out its Elijah Akins. He played a position for nearly 90 minutes that he only practiced once. That's hard to do."

Cape Fear falls to 6-5-1 on the season. Their next game is scheduled for Wednesday, September 17th, where they will take on Spartanburg Methodist at home at 3:00 p.m.
