Men's Soccer Earns Big Win at Home

Wilmington, NC - Cape Fear men's soccer defeated USC Union 13-0 on Saturday.

Eion Dockery led the Sea Devils, scoring his first career goal in route to a hat trick. His third goal came on a free kick from 53 yards out.

Sam Bell also finished with a hat trick and added an assist.

DaShaun Brown added two goals, while Tyler Keser scored one goal and dished two assists.

After so many games in recent days, it was a much needed score and result for the team.

"I think we really needed this," said assistant coach McCartney Barrier. "We have a lot of tired legs and injuries. It was nice to see the boys having fun and laughing, and just enjoying the game."

Saturday's game was Sophomore Night, which saw six sophomores play their last game at Legion Stadium.

"I'm very pleased with sending the sophomores out with a win at home," said coach Barrier. "I remember my sophomore night and it wasn't even close to this result we had today. I hope this win will boost us into the playoffs and I hope we can rest our legs before the playoffs. Very pleased with the game today."

Head coach C.W. Ponton was also very pleased with his team's performance, and hopes this will help develop a "killer instinct."

"You don't always enjoy running up the score, but I'm trying to develop a killer instinct and trying to nip complacency in the butt, whether we're winning big or losing big."

Despite the final scoreline, the Sea Devils didn't put the game fully away until the second half.

"I want my players turned on the entire game, and I let them know the first half today was not good enough," said coach Ponton. "We came out the second half and put in a good shift."

The win caps off a large number of games the past week and a half, and gives Cape Fear some much needed rest.

"With so many players out or even playing with injuries we needed this," said Ponton. "Now we need rest and will appreciate our first back to back days with no games this month before playoffs."

Cape Fear improves to 7-7-1 overall and in conference play. Their next game is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24th, for the Region 10 Conference Playoff Play-in Game.
