Sea Devils Squeak Past Catawba

Wilmington, NC - Sunday's matinee between No. 15 Cape Fear Community College and Catawba Valley came down to the wire as the Sea Devils remained unbeaten on their home floor after a 61-59 overtime victory in women's basketball action at the Schwartz Center.

Monica Alexander scored five of her team's eight points in the five minute extra period to finish with a team-high 17 points.

"We had to grind this one out," said CFCC Coach Chris Harris. "Give Catawba credit for not going away easy. I thought we had good energy at the beginning and just could not keep it up consistently throughout. Monica came up big in overtime.

Cape Fear grabbed their 14th straight result and improved to 15-1 overall. After a 90-75 result against the Red Hawks earlier this month, the Sea Devils completed the season sweep over its conference opponent and moved to 2-0 in games decided during the extra session.

De'njah Porter helped Cape Fear in the scoring column to gain a 37-24 lead at the break. However, Catawba Valley outscored the Sea Devils 19-8 during the third quarter to get within two before forcing the five minute overtime.

The Sea Devils look to improve on their 7-1 mark in Region 10 play with a back-to-back road games against Guilford Tech and Patrick Henry CC on January 30-31.
