Lady Sea Devils Defeat Pioneers

Spartanburg, SC - Cape Fear women's soccer opened Region 10 conference play with a win over Spartanburg Methodist, 4-2. Freshman Carly Higgins scored a first half brace, while sophomore Alaina Capps scored two goals in the second.

It was a high scoring first half, with the teams tied 2-2 heading into the break. Higgins' first goal was assisted by freshman Madison Bolen, while freshman Nina Perry provided the assist for Higgins' second. With two goals today, Higgins increased her total to a team high seven for the season.

It was a back and forth game, with both teams creating scoring chances. It kept both Cape Fear goalies busy, with sophomore Kenedy Green saving five shots in the first half, and freshman C.J. Garvey saving eight in the second.

Both teams created scoring opportunities in the second half. Sophomore Janessa Annis led the attack for Sea Devils, starting many of the team's chances. It led to both goals for Capps, with Perry and sophomore Sierra Raynor providing assists. Capps' brace gives her three goals for the season.

"This was a step forward for us as a team," said head coach Ryan Deppa. "[It is] always good for the team to earn a win on the road."

Deppa emphasizes his team has work to do, but is pleased with their overall play.

"We have a ways to go, but the girls made progress this week, and that is great to see.  Both teams created solid opportunities to score and both teams came up big at times in the back.  It was a competitive match."

The win improves Cape Fear to 3-0 overall, and 1-0 in conference play.

They will stay in Spartanburg to play against Converse University's Junior Varsity team, Sunday September 3rd. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
