Women's Soccer Defeats Wake Tech

Wilmington, NC - Cape Fear women's soccer defeated a shorthanded Wake Tech Community College, 9-0. Sophomore Alaina Capps scored four goals.

The Sea Devils entered today undefeated and coming off a 9-1 victory over USC Lancaster. The Eagles of Wake Tech made the trip with just nine active players. A number of injuries decimated an already thin roster.

Capps opened the scoring in the fourth minute, taking a shot by herself from outside the box and finding the bottom left corner of the goal.

Despite the early lead and field advantage, the Sea Devils were sloppy with their passing to start. It improved as the game carried on, and the home team looked to get their second goal of the game. That nearly came in 14th minute, as Carly Higgins attempted to curl a shot to the right corner, but the goalkeeper made a strong save and pushed it wide.

Capps scored her second goal off a corner kick in the 18th minute. Madison Bolen took the corner kick well, putting it right where Capps needed to head it in.

Higgins scored the team's third goal in the 21st minute off an assist from Bolen. Bolen played a solid ball that was deflected, but Higgins was able to track it down and shoot it passed the keeper.

Capps earned her hat trick in the 24th minute, as Higgins created an open opportunity on goal off a well-placed passed.

Nina Perry scored her third goal of the season and the team's fifth of the game in the 32nd minute, sending a shot high and into the goal from just outside the box.

Higgins scored her second of the game seconds before halftime. Janessa Annis played a short free kick to Anderson O'Neal, who hit a low cross in front of the backline to Higgins who tapped it in.

The game remained 6-0 until the 52nd minute, when Sydney Parker scored off an assist from Higgins. Capps then scored her fourth goal on a solo effort in the 61st minute.

Head coach Ryan Deppa praised Capps' play afterwards.

"Alaina Capps had quite a special evening finding the net four times. She continues to be an attacking threat in Region 10."

Capps now has 14 goals on the season, three behind Higgins.

The ninth goal came in the 78th minute as Bolen scored her first goal the season on a screamer, shooting from outside 30 yards and sailing it into the upper left corner.

Bolen's goal was the last major action of the night, and the scored ended 9-0. The Sea Devils had 44 shot attempts and 27 on goal, while Wake Tech managed zero shots. Eagles goalkeeper Rachel Howard made 18 saves.

While Annis didn't score, coach Deppa praised her hard work.

"Janessa Annis played a very solid game. She kept things moving, was dangerous with the ball at her feet, and helped others be dangerous in the attacking third."

He also praised the team's play, stating, they, "put in a great effort again to take better care of the ball."

Finally, he took note of Wake Tech's effort despite being down two players.

"Wake Tech's players worked hard as well. They were up against it, and worked hard through the final whistle."

Cape Fear improves to 8-0 on the season. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th, where they will take on Spartanburg Methodist at home at 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Youtube. A link to the broadcast will be available at goseadevils.com.
