Sea Devil Women's Volleyball Wins Home Opener

Wilmington, NC - The Cape Fear women's volleyball team won their first home game of the season, beating Guilford Tech Community College 3-0.

Cape Fear served to start the first set, with sophomore Faryn Salazar earning the first point on an ace. After three straight points by Guilford Tech, Cape Fear rallied to win seven straight.

After Guilford broke the streak, the Sea Devils would win the next four points, forcing the Titans to call timeout with the score 11-4 in the home team's favor.

Throughout the first game, Cape Fear communicated well, setting up a number of the points on assisted plays. The seven point rally in the early parts of the set gave them a lot of momentum, ultimately cruising to win it by a score of 25-6.

The Sea Devils got off to good start in the second set, taking an early 10-3 lead. By this point, they were in complete control of the match, setting up each kill through patient, organized play. They aggressively attacked Guilford Tech, setting up a number of spikes the Titans couldn't handle.

During the second set, Cape Fear scored 12 straight points before Guilford would break the streak at 19-4. Guilford would get a few points back, but the Sea Devils would hold on to win the set 25-8.

The third set would go much the same as the first two, with Cape Fear taking an early commanding lead, 12-2. Cape Fear maintained their aggressive play, making it difficult for Guildford Tech to gain any advantage. The final set would be their most dominant of the match, ending with a score of 25-4.

Cape Fear was the better team the entire match, building a large lead through multiple double digit rallies. Their organization and communication were key to winning in three straight sets.

"I'm very pleased," said head coach Emily Coleman after the game. "[Guilford Tech] are a tough team because they're usually very scrappy, very athletic, and it's hard to come in and play clean and consistent, but i think that's what we've been working on all week, and I think we executed it well."

Coleman noted that while they can't overlook any opponent, they need to continue to improve with regionals approaching in November. Asked about what she would like her team to build off of moving forward: "I think just increasing our speed and our tempo of the game."

Today's win was the Sea Devils second straight, and improved their conference record to 5-1, and 5-6 overall.

They will play next Saturday, September 24th, at home against Bryant & Stratton College at 11:00 a.m.
