Bolivia, NC - Cape Fear women's volleyball came from behind to defeat Northern Virginia Community College Thursday night, 3-2.
The opening set was tight, as both teams refused to give up the winning point; but it eventually went Northern Virginia's way, 29-27.
The second set was more one-sided. The Sea Devils hit just .034 percent, and Northern Virginia won by a score of 25-18.
The Nighthawks of Northern Virginia, however, were locked in offensively, hitting .239 and .276 in the first two sets, respectively, and combining for 28 kills.
"Northern Virginia came out swinging," said head coach Emily Coleman.
Down 2-0, Cape Fear was on the verge of losing its first match of the season. They fought back though, winning the third and fourth sets 27-25 and 25-22, hitting a game high .278 in the third.
The comeback forced a deciding fifth set, which the Sea Devils took 15-13.
"I can't say enough about our fight," said Coleman. "We never give up and that's all you can ask for as a coach."
Shilah Haumann finished with 14 kills, Payton Schoenleber had 56 assists, and Karly Mathias had a game high 32 digs.
The Sea Devils improve to 12-0 on the season. They have a busy weekend ahead, with two games scheduled for Saturday, September 30th. They will kick things off against Richard Bland College at 11:00 a.m., followed by a matchup with Bryant & Stratton College at 3:00 p.m. Both games are at Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, NC.
