Wilmington, N.C. – Cape Fear Community College hosted its Tenth Annual Sea Devil Athletic Banquet on Wednesday, May 1st at the McKeithan Auditorium located at the North Campus. The men's basketball, men's golf, men's soccer, women’s basketball, women's soccer, women's volleyball and the cheerleading teams were all honored at the event.
Men's basketball celebrated their successful 2012-13 season with two members making the All-Region team. Faronte Drakeford was voted to the 1st team while Anthony Williams was voted to the 2nd team. Drakeford was also honored as Region 10 Player of the Year and NJCAA 3rd Team All-American. Various team awards were also handed out including Kyle Keck receiving Most Improved and Ben Jacobson was awarded the Coach's Award. Faronte Drakeford took home the final piece of hardware as he was voted the Most Valuable Player. This year's Sea Devil finished the season with a 19-12 record.
Tanner Pearson earned Region 10 honors after leading the men's
golf team to a 3rd place finish in the Region 10
Championship. Pearson’s stellar post season play landed
him Region 10 runner-up medalist as well as a member of the
All-Region team. Pearson was named the team's Most Valuable Player
while sophomore Tommy Raddin took home the Coach's Award. Freshman
Zach Joines earned Most Improved.
Men's soccer showcased three all-region performers this season.
Two players were named to the 2nd team
including Robert Sandidge and Alex Amicy. Tyler Clark was named to
the honorable mention All-Region team. Sophomore Robert Sandidge
was named Most Valuable Player and Alex Amicy earned the Coach's
Award. The Most Improved recipient was freshman Gabe Moore. The
men's soccer team ended the season with an 8-6 overall record and a
conference record of 7-6.
In their inaugural season, the Lady Sea Devil basketball team gave the fans a lot to cheer about. Boasting nine freshmen, the Sea Devils stormed out of the gate, winning seven of their first ten games. Porsha Buchanan and Alexis Redd both garnered first team All-Region accolades. This tandem also took home the Most Valuable Player and Most Improved awards respectively. Ashley Altman rounded out the team awards earning the Coaches Award.
Winning 78% of their conference matches, the Lady Sea Devils had reason to celebrate. Jenna Baranowski and Taylor Simpson were named to the All-Region team 1st team. This season's Most Valuable Player was also taken home by Baranowski and the Coach's Award went to Taylor Simpson. The Most Improved award was collected by Heidi Milliken. The ladies finished with an overall record of 17-5 and a conference record of 14-4.
For the 3rd straight season women's soccer took home the Region 10 regular season title. Six players were selected to this year's all-region team including three to the 1st team, Samantha Culbertson, Collen Pisano and Amanda Fenton. Haley Laurie was named to the 2nd team while Samantha Walker and Ashlee Bogenn netted Honorable Mention. Kerinn Hall earned this year's Coach's Award and Collen Pisano received Most Improved. This year's Most Valuable Player was Samantha Culbertson.
The cheerleading team once again provided CFCC fans with a great season. Their countless hours spent practicing was put on display at the annual Beach Bash Nationals Cheerleading Competition. Here the Sea Devils won the college all-female squad division, and also won the overall college title, where they defeated over 50 co-ed squads from four-year colleges. This season's Coach's Award went to Jessica Bowers, while Kwanishia Nelson was named Most Improved. Ashley Lane took home the Most Valuable Player Award.
In addition to the student-athlete awards, Women's Soccer Head Coach Chris Libert took home his 2ndstraight Region 10 Coach of the Year award. He has earned this honor an unprecedented six times, in the past seven seasons.
The annual “Sea Devil Award”, which was implemented to thank an individual that goes above and beyond the call of duty within the Athletic Department, is given to a dedicated fan, friend and sponsor of the CFCC athletic program. Kenneth Hufham was honored with the 2012-13 “Sea Devil Award” for countless working hours and support of Sea Devil Athletics.
