Men's Soccer Remains Undefeated

Martinsville, VA - Cape Fear men's soccer continued an impressive start to the season, defeating Patrick Henry Community College 3-0. Sophomore forward Tyler Nelson led the Sea Devils, scoring two goals in 15 minutes.

Nelson's first goal came unassisted in the 7th minute. His second came roughly 10 minutes later, as freshman forward DaShaun Brown provided the assist. With two goals today, Nelson raised his total to three on the season, tied for most with Brown.

Brown did more than assist, however, controlling the midfield and causing havoc for the opposition with a clean first touch.

Cape Fear remained dominant into the second half. Defenders Eion Dockery and Logan Edwards were solid in the back, shutting down the middle of the field and preventing the Patriots from creating offense. Along with strong play in defense, both had scoring opportunities off corner kicks.

The third and final goal came in the 79th minute, courtesy of sophomore midfielder Franco Fernandez. It is his second of the season.

Capping off the win was a standout performance from sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Gusmao, who made six saves today in route to his first clean sheet of the season.

"This is what we've been waiting for," said head coach C.W. Ponton on his team's win, calling it a "complete team victory" where the team played to their potential.

"Every player got playing time this season. The goal now is to take it one game at a time and not become complacent."

The Sea Devils remain undefeated with the win, improving to 3-0 both overall and in conference play.

They play next this Saturday, September 9th against USC Salkehatchie on the road at 4:00 p.m.
