Holly Springs, NC - Cape Fear men's soccer scored a late winner to defeat Wake Tech Community College on the road, 3-2.
The Sea Devils entered today's game looking to win two games in a row after coming off a dominating 6-0 win at home against USC Sumter.
They got off on the right foot, as Renzo Tenorio scored his first goal of the season in the 21st minute. He was assisted by Tyler Nelson, who played the ball across the six yard box to Tenorio.
The Eagles of Wake Tech leveled the score at 1-1 afterwards. The score remained that way until the 63rd minute, when Sea Devils midfielder Alfredo Martinez put the team up 2-1. It was Martinez first of the season.
Wake Tech, however, tied the game at 2-2. It looked as if Cape Fear would walk away with a draw, but Nelson scored the winner in the 82nd minute, taking the ball down the right wing and scoring from a tight angle. Nelson now has five goals on the season.
Nelson was the hero offensively, but goalkeeper Lucas Gusmao saved the game earlier, making key one-on-one saves, winning every cross, and stopping a penalty kick that could've shifted momentum Wake Tech's way. Gusmao made five saves in the game.
Afterwards, head coach C.W. Ponton praised the effort of both teams, and Wake Tech's overall ability.
"Wake Tech came to play, but so did we. They definitely have a fast and skilled team."
The game was influenced by a few controversial calls, and three Sea Devils were booked for yellow cards. That said, coach Ponton liked the way his team remained focused.
"There were many controversial calls, but they were both ways," said Ponton. "In the end, my guys stayed physical, resilient, and wanted the win bad enough to come away with a 3-2 victory."
Cape Fear improves to 5-2 on the season, and 4-2 in conference. They won't have to wait long to face Wake Tech again, as the Eagles will make the trip to Wilmington and face the Sea Devils this Saturday, September 30th at Legion Stadium. Gametime is scheduled for 12 p.m.
