Wilmington, NC- Men's soccer defeated USC Sumter 3-1 at home on Saturday.
Travis Cotton scored two goals. Cotton played multiple positions and even started out of his usual central midfield role. Both of Cottons goals were assisted by freshman Raul Venegas. The Sea Devils third goal of the game was scored by Quavon White. White started his first game for Cape Fear bringing a high level of intensity and scoring a goal by staying patient right in front of the goal and slotting it around the keeper. TJ Antilla brought a very high work rate off the bench helping the Sea Devils take and keep control of the center of the field. Taylor Trimble leadership, communication, and defensive composure were extremely beneficial in helping the Sea Devils blank the Fire Antz in the second half.
Coach C.W Ponton says "We came out very slow in the first half and Sumter was able to capitalize and get a goal in the first 5 minutes. Going into the half I felt the game was very even and we definitely were not playing to our potential. we came out in the second half with a high level of intensity and the desire to win the game and I'm very pleased with the outcome. Our boys worked hard, stayed composed, and did their job so that we can wrap the night up with a W."
The Sea Devils are now 2-3 in conference play and 3-3 on the season.
Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, October 5th as they take on Patrick Henry Community College in Axton, VA. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm as they look to defeat another conference opponent.
