In Short: Cape Fear Men's Soccer finishes off their season in a competitive double overtime matchup in the Region 10 Conference Championships

Highlights:

For the first time since 2008, Cape Fear Men's Soccer was able to persevere through tournament play and compete in the Region 10 Conference Championship matchup versus the Patrick & Henry Patriots. The Sea Devils' Thursday Night win over the Louisburg Hurricanes set the tone for this group: Cape Fear is ready to fight for the title.

After competing against the Patrick & Henry Patriots throughout the regular season, the Sea Devils knew they would have to bring their A game in order to be competitive. "PHCC is a fit, strong team with lots of talent across the board," remarks Head Coach Dave Martin. "And while they were difficult to contain at times, I think we were the better team tonight - but of course I'm biased."

While the Patriots put the Sea Devils down 2-0 at the beginning of the First Half, the Sea Devils were actively creating positive midfield combinations and working out attacking runs throughout the half. Freshman Cuauthy Espinoza placed one in for the Sea Devils to answer the Patriots' second goal - keeping Cape Fear's energy high moving into the Second Half of regulation play.

Cape Fear's back line executed poised, but aggressive defensive plays and were able to hold off the Patriots and their scoring opportunities for the rest of the half. Returning Sophomore Josue Palacios evened things up for the Sea Devils late in the Second Half as Cape Fear's midfield hustled to keep the Patriots at bay.

Both teams fought valiantly as they competed in two overtime periods, but Patrick & Henry was able to capitalize on a key opportunity and finished the match 3-2. While this was not the desired outcome, the Sea Devils hold their heads high and look forward to an action-packed season next year.

"Soccer is a cruel game - sometimes you play really well, create chances, defend great and still lose…that's a tough one!" says Head Coach Dave Martin. "It's a nice accomplishment to get to the conference final. Congrats to all the players and staff. We made great memories in my first year as Head Coach."
