Women's Soccer Opens 2018 Season with a Win

Rochester, NY - Cape Fear women's soccer opened the 2018 season with a, 7-0, victory over Sussex Community College.

"It was a good way to start the season," said head coach Ryan Deppa. "The kids worked hard for each other."

Sophomore forward Carly Higgins opened the scoring for the Sea Devils in the 7th minute with a solid strike that went over the hands of the Sussex keeper. She was assisted by freshman defender/midfielder Samantha Iorio.

The score remained at 1-0 until the 41st minute, when freshman midfielder/forward Trinity Davis scored to double her team's lead off an assist from Higgins.

The second half remained scoreless until the 69th minute, when the Sea Devils scored five goals in a span of 13 minutes.

Higgins recorded two more goals to earn a hat trick. One goal came off an assist from freshman midfielder Tallison Brainard.

Freshman midfielder/forward Esperanza McKay tucked in Cape Fear's fifth thanks to another assist from Higgins.

Freshman midfielder/forward Kaitlin Plienis recorded the team's sixth goal off an assist from sophomore defender/midfielder Dani Donovan, who soon after found sophomore midfielder Skyler Giolitti for the team's 7th and final goal. Giolitti scored by putting the ball just inside the post.

Sophomore goalkeeper C.J Garvey recorded her first shutout of the season, making six saves. Her best save came late in the game as she preserved the shutout.

It was a strong first game for the Sea Devils, who defeated a Sussex County squad that was a 2017 Region XIX finalist. Coach Deppa was happy with the win, but stated his team doesn't have a long time to celebrate with another tough match coming up.

"We have a short time to enjoy it as we are back on the field vs #10 NJCAA national power Monroe Community College."

The win gives Cape Fear a 1-0 record to start the season
