Women's Soccer Continues Winning Ways

Wilmington, NC - Cape Fear women's soccer (6-1) won its second game on the same day, defeating Howard Community College (2-4) by a score of 1-0.

Because a school had to drop out of the Port City Classic, Cape Fear filled in for the final match of the tournament. It meant an incredibly quick turnaround, however, as the Sea Devils had finished their regularly scheduled game against Oxford College of Emory just 30 minutes prior to tip-off.

"Every single player on this team played a huge role in helping the team earn positive results today," said head coach Ryan Deppa. "They played three college games in just over 24 hours on turf [and] in major heat. Absolutely crazy."

Despite virtually no rest between games, the girls were ready. Goals were hard to come by, but the Sea Devils found the back of the net in the 70th minute as Carly Higgins scored off a header thanks to an assist from Tallison Brainard.

The goal gives Higgins her 10th goal of the season, while Brainard earned her fifth assist,  which puts her tied with Kaitlin Plienis for the most assists on the team.

Additionally, goalkeeper C.J. Garvey earned her sixth shutout of the season.

Coach Deppa was extremely proud of his team after the game.

"[Cape Fear] showed so much heart, so much toughness this weekend, so much character. They represented CFCC, Wilmington, their teammates, our program, their family in such a great way today."

"To do what they just did today, versus two solid and well coached programs, says a great deal about them. I am sure everyone that came out and supported them is full of pride. This team has been up against it, and they proved once again that together they do some special things."

Coach Deppa hopes his team's achievements spread around campus.

"I sure hope word spreads about these kids and the crowds continue to grow as the season moves forward. They are fun to watch."

The Sea Devils are scheduled to play next on Friday, September 14th as they hit the road to take on Wake Tech Community College. Gametime is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
