Men's Soccer Defeats USC Salkehatchie

Allendale, SC - Cape Fear men's soccer won an ugly game by a large margin, defeating USC Salkehatchie 4-0. Franco Fernandez and DeShaun Brown each scored two goals.

The Sea Devils led 1-0 after the 6th minute. While they scored early, it took time to get started due to the rainy conditions.

"We started off slow, [and the] conditions took the guys a while to adapt to, but we turned on once we scored in the 6th minute," said head coach C.W. Ponton.

Fernandez and Brown were dynamic attacking the opposition. Brown's brace came despite limited playing time. Both players remain tied for most the goals on the team with nine this season.

While those two provided the goals, Christian Vega provided the assists, leading with two. He had solid positioning on both offense and defense.

Alfredo Martinez also stood out by controlling the midfield and being a pivotal part of Cape Fear's transitional play.

Coach Ponton credited the defense for getting the clean sheet, specifically the play of goalkeeper Lucas Gusmao, along with field players Victor Melo Pelaez, Keaton Simmons, Logan Edwards, Eion Dockery, Alex Degrassi, and Nathaniel Lorenz.

"Everyone got playing time and I'm pleased with the outcome," said Ponton.

The Sea Devils outshot the Indians 13-12. They had 12 shots on target, while Salkehatchie had six.

Cape Fear improves to 7-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play. They play next on October 10th at Richard Bland College. Gametime is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
