Men's Soccer Picks up Second Conference Win

Union, SC - Cape Fear men's soccer picked up its second win in as many days after defeating conference opponent USC Union, 11-1, on Sunday.

Freshman forward Charles Basse led the Sea Devils with five goals and one assist. He gave great effort throughout the game and dominated defenders with his physical play, which contributed to his goal tally.

Sophomore forward DaShaun Brown added two goals and an assist. Both of his goals came from crosses.

Another standout was freshman midfielder Ndabo Oliver. He scored one goal, but also contributed by using his creativity and quickness to blow by defenders and help in transition. Along with his one goal scored in the 38th minute, he tallied assists to Brown and Basse in the 47th and 52nd minutes, respectively.

Finally, goalkeeper Wells Bridgforth showed a lot of composure in goal. He commanded the field and moved the defense into the right positions throughout the game, particularly in the first half, where they held Union to just two shots.

"This is how we can play," said head coach C.W. Ponton. "I'm definitely disappointed in us giving up the clean sheet. I prefer that over the big win, but today the big win will have to do and we'll learn not to turn off like we did on their goal today. Every player who stepped on the field today put in a good shift and that's great to see considering we played yesterday."

The Sea Devils improve to 2-0 on the season and in conference play. Their next game is scheduled for Wednesday, August 29th, where they will take on Spartanburg Methodist on the road at 4:00 p.m.
