Wilmington, NC - Cape Fear men's soccer suffered its first defeat of the season in a 3-0 loss to Patrick Henry Community College.

It was a tough outing for the Sea Devils that started the season undefeated and had only conceded two goals entering Wednesday night's game.

"I'm not sure what happened, but the team that I know we can be did not show up today," said assistant coach McCartney Barrier. 

Coach Barrier singled out the play of Cameron Powers and Javier Maldonado for solid play in the loss.

"Cam played really hard and had a really good game. Javi was really solid in the back," said coach Barrier.

Head coach C.W. Ponton hopes his team learns from their first loss of the season.

"I hope my team reads this," said Ponton. "I hope it eats at them just how poor they played in our first home game. I take responsibility for this loss though. I haven't been hard enough on them, [and] that will change." Ponton believes he will have to re-evaluate his starting 11 after the loss.

Like coach Barrier, he also felt Cameron Powers played well.

"Cameron Powers proved tonight he wants it. You look for those kinds of players when everything is going bad."

Cape Fear drops to 3-1 on the season and in conference play. They return to action this Saturday, September 8th, when they face off against USC Salkehatchie at home at 3:00 p.m.
