Spartanburg, SC - Cape Fear men's soccer continued its undefeated start to the season after a 2-1 double overtime win against conference opponent Spartanburg Methodist.

The Sea Devils took the lead in the 4th minute after forward Charles Basse put pressure on the keeper. The pressure allowed him to toe poke the ball away from the keeper and into the net.

Basse also scored the winner in double overtime. Midfielder Javier Maldonado fed Basse the ball, and he was able to beat the defender one-on-one and slot the ball near the post.

With two more goals today, Basse increased his goal total to eight goals in three games.

"We won, and I'm happy with that," said head coach C.W. Ponton. "Without a doubt, both teams are better than you would have seen if you watched the game this evening."

Ponton sees his squad making the same kinds of mistakes in each game, but believes they have a lot to do with the quick turnover between games.

Despite these mistakes, Coach Ponton trusts his team and their ability to improve moving forward.

"I have confidence in my team, but I also know we're much better than the performance I saw today."

Cape Fear improves to 3-0 on the season overall and in conference play. The team will get a week off before their next game, which is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th at 4 p.m. against Patrick Henry Community College. The game is at home and will be the first home game of the season for the Sea Devils.
