Cape Fear Womens Hoops Stays Perfect

Multiple CFCC Women's Basketball players cheering and coming onto the court to celebrate a good play

In Short: Cape Fear Women's Basketball remains undefeated at 10-0 after this past weekend's matchups, but looks forward to continued progress.

Highlights:

The Sea Devils Women's Basketball team continues their hot streak as they defeat Thomas Nelson and Patrick & Henry in a clean sweep this past weekend. Cape Fear took this opportunity to test unique lineup combinations, practice new plays, and gauge the overall fitness level of their team across the board as they played 3 games back-to-back in the Schwartz Center from Friday to Sunday afternoon.

In their first matchup on Friday, the Sea Devils took on the Thomas Nelson Gators. Cape Fear took control of the game early with Sophomore Shaylin Pollock making her presence known in the paint - her offensive and defensive rebounding playing a key role in the Sea Devils' success.

Sophomore Alonna Dunlap's ability to finish strong under the basket and draw fouls when needed kept the Sea Devils strong throughout both halves. Dunlap scored a team high of 18 points and went 5 for 6 from the foul line.

In the second quarter, the Sea Devils gave up a few unfortunate turnovers and allowed the Gators to catch up. But Cape Fear soon locked back in moving into the second half of the matchup. They extended their lead from only 11 points to a 21 point lead with confidence to end the game.

Moving into Saturday's game, the Sea Devils started off strong at first against the Patrick & Henry Patriots, but a few miscalculated turnovers kept the Pats treading water with a 23-18 end to the first quarter of play. Moving into the second quarter, the Sea Devils stretched the score gap with some great ball movement and jumpers from Freshman standout Senali Moss, who finished the game with 19 points for Cape Fear.

The Patriots fought tooth and nail to stay alive moving into the second half, but the Sea Devils were able to close things out with a few clutch fast break opportunities and consistent defense from Shaylin Pollock and Michelle Jacobs.

Fast forward to Sunday's rematch, the Patriots have had enough and locked in their offensive strategy early on in the game. Cape Fear trails their opponent for the first time all weekend as they make some careless turnovers and fail to land layups and outside jump shots. Meanwhile, the Patriots keep their foot on the gas and manage to make a couple of well-placed 3-pointers to answer Cape Fear's minimal scoring to start the game. Both teams are experiencing an excess of foul calls due to strict officiating endured throughout the game.

Cape Fear doesn't give up, however, and decides to flip the script on the Patriots - drawing fouls as much as possible and returning to their offensive rhythm as a unit. Sophomore returner Imani Sutton provided incredible athleticism on the defensive end while Michelle Jacobs and Senali Moss tag-team an impressive array of points and assists to keep the Sea Devils in it.

While the game stayed close all the way down to the final minutes, Imani Sutton went to the line and went 2-for-2 to solidify their 73-70 win over the hard-working Patriots team.

Although the weekend was a great team success, Cape Fear knows that they have room to grow as they match up with tough opponents in the coming weeks of Region 10 Conference play. "I'm happy we secured these wins, but we still have a lot of work to do," reflects Head Coach Trae Bryant. "We're struggling to put a full 4 quarters together, but we're excited to keep winning and keep building together."
