Sea Devils Win Region Women’s Soccer Title

Lancaster, SC - Coach Melissa Anderson's Cape Fear Community College women's soccer team defeated Louisburg, 2-0, Sunday afternoon to win the Region 10 championship.

The Sea Devils (17-1) advance into District championship play on November 9th – facing the College of Southern Maryland.

Anna Mixon's unassisted goal at the five minute mark was all Cape Fear needed to defeat Louisburg (16-4). Jamie Berti added an insurance score at 21:02 off an assist from Alexis Thompson.

"The journey has been a team effort since day one," an elated Anderson noted after the triumph. "And that was rewarded with the Region 10 championship today."

Cape Fear and the College of Southern Maryland have already squared off this season, with the Sea Devils knocking off the Hawks, 2-1.  This marks the only loss on the season for CSM as they have rattled off 13 consecutive victories, giving up only four goals during the streak.  CFCC enters the matchup winning 10 straight games, yielding only three goals against on the season.  This heavy weight match pits two of the top 15 teams in the country as the College of Southern Maryland enters the contest ranked #8 and Cape Fear #15.  Game time is slated for 12:00 pm in La Plata, MD.

The Sea Devils have been led all year by first-year player and former New Hanover High School standout, Nikki Tiller. Tiller and company have a 17-1 overall record heading into Saturday's match, with the team's only loss on Sept. 25.

The former Wildcat has started 15 games this season and tops the team with 47 points (16 goals and 15 assists). Sophomore Anna Mixon (Croatan) has shined in her second year at CFCC and has provided leadership for some of the younger players as the second leading goal scorer with 13 tallies on the season.

CFCC has a number of players on the squad from across the tri-county area as Megan Fouty (Topsail), Angie Zanelli (Laney) and Sarah Clinard (Hoggard) have been instrumental in the success of the Sea Devil's defense, fashioning a .24 goal against average this season.  Cheyenne Gordon (New Hanover) has also provided some size up front at forward.
