Women's Soccer Defeats Sumter on the Road

Sumter, SC (September 6th, 2023) - The Sea Devils hit the road for their rematch against the USC Sumter Fire Ants on their home turf yesterday afternoon. After fighting through some well-made adjustments by the Fire Ants, Cape Fear was able to gain control of the match and finish with a solid 4-0 shutout.

The Fire Ants based their game strategy around a more defensive-first approach: making it difficult for the Sea Devils to go on offensive runs and put pieces together smoothly. Maya McDonald managed to score the first goal for Cape Fear with an assist from Alissa Campano towards the end of the first half.

Moving into the second half, Lauren Laux earned her team a clutch penalty kick where Kailie Ross stepped in to put the Sea Devils up 2-0. Once the Sea Devils had the momentum, Bryleigh Beaver managed to fire another one in, assisted by Sarah Smith.

Maya McDonald returned to the score sheet to finish the match strong with an assist from Lauren LauxReagan Roberts managed her role well in the goal with another Sea Devil shutout and 5 impactful saves on the defensive end.

"A slight tweak in tactic allowed us to adjust to their defensive strategy and we regained better ball control," said Head Coach C.W. Ponton. "Putting a goal away towards the end of the first half definitely settled us down and we finished well. Big credit to Reagan Roberts who made some big saves in the first half."

The Sea Devils will return home tomorrow, September 8th, to take on the Louisburg Hurricanes at 4 PM on North Campus Soccer Field.
