Sea Devils Finish the Fire Ants

Wilmington, NC (August 29th, 2023) - After their most recent home matchup was canceled due to inclement weather, the Sea Devils Women's Soccer team returned home this afternoon as they finished off the Division I USC Sumter Fire Ants. The team continues to expand on their communication and overall chemistry as they were able to dominate possession of the ball and retain solid off ball movement across the pitch.

Peri Farrar led the Sea Devils on the attack with 2 goals and 2 assists, while newcomer Johanna Morales made her starting debut with 2 goals and 1 assist. Fellow newcomer Taylor Simco also managed to put one on the board to continue building on the Sea Devils' offensive momentum.

On the defensive end, Kailie Ross played a key role in managing the backfield when it came to numbers-up attacks along the sidelines, while goalkeeper Maleah Bainer finished off the game with a clean sheet.

While Cape Fear continues to develop their systems and set pieces in these early stages of the season, the Sea Devils are optimistic as they utilize this experience to build momentum for future matchups.

"We have been trying some players in different positions and are working on geling as a unit in those roles," says Head Women's Soccer Coach C.W. Ponton. "It's nice achieving this win as a team and giving all of our non-injured players game experience. The plan is to take this momentum and carrying forward."

The Sea Devils will face off with USC Sumter again on their home turf next week on Wednesday, September 6th.
