Womens Soccer Wins 6-0 Over Wake Tech

Wilmington, NC (September 14, 2023) - Cape Fear Women's Soccer earns their second Region 10 Conference win of the season as they defeated the Wake Tech Eagles of Raleigh, NC. In his second year as Head Women's Soccer Coach, C.W. Ponton continues to build on last season's success as the team climbs to #16 in the NJCAA Division II Women's Soccer national rankings.

The first goal of the match came in the first 5 minutes of play from tenacious newcomer Johanna Morales with an assist by Lauren Laux. Cape Fear moved the ball cohesively up the pitch to create numerous opportunities while making selfless runs to open up gaps for forwards and midfielders alike to have attacking opportunities.

Defensively, the Sea Devils contained the Eagles' attempts and were able to confidently disrupt their set pieces as they made their way down the pitch. After shutting down Wake Tech's attacks, the back line was able to thoughtfully place balls for their midfielders to make the most out of transition plays moving up the pitch. Keeli Crisco and Trinay Rudd held down the fort alongside Maleah Bainer - giving her the support needed to earn yet another clean sheet with 7 saves.

The second goal came soon after in the 10th minute with a cross from Johanna Morales to Maya McDonald - where she continued to dominate the game with 5 total goals. McDonald's 5 goals put her just one goal short of tying the CFCC record for most goals in a single game, which she currently still holds. McDonald continued to find gaps to put herself in the best positions to score with assists from Halie BlizzardSarah Smith, and Justine Moesch.

"We put away the majority of our opportunities on goal today, which is something we've been focusing a lot on in training," says Head Coach C.W. Ponton. "I'm also very pleased with all of our freshmen and the way they continue to grow and make an impact on our success on the field."

The Sea Devils will return to North Campus Soccer Field on Wednesday, September 20th for Sophomore Day celebrations as they take on Richard Bland at 3 PM.
