Sea Devils Overcome the Hurricanes

Wilmington, NC (September 8, 2023) - Cape Fear Women's Soccer took on their first Region 10 Conference opponent of the season, the Louisburg College Hurricanes, and finished them off in a 3-0 sweep.

The Sea Devils were off to a slow start at first and initially struggled to fall into their normal offensive rhythm. While the back line managed to contain the Hurricanes and prevent them from making any major moves in the first half, it took the Sea Devils some extra time to reconnect and make more cohesive attacking runs up the pitch.

Newcomer Johanna Morales stepped up to place one in towards the end of the first half to get the Sea Devils on the board and bring the team together.

While the Hurricanes managed to establish a few solid plays throughout the second half, Cape Fear found their momentum and resumed their normal playing style as a unit to become relentless on the attack. Maya McDonald was a workhorse moving towards the goal while Trinay Rudd and Maleah Bainer held things down in the backfield.

"While we started off a little slow, I'm pleased with our overall performance to start off conference play," says Head Coach C.W. Ponton. "We will continue to improve on our mental toughness to put our foot on the gas from the beginning, and that will make these wins more satisfying. Something to move forward with for sure."

Cape Fear Women's Soccer will return to the pitch at North Campus Soccer Field on Wednesday, September 13th at 3 PM.
