Womens Soccer Takes Region Title & Prepares for Districts

Wilmington, NC (October 21, 2023) - Cape Fear Women's Soccer hosted Wake Tech on Saturday afternoon as they battled for the Region 10 Conference Tournament Championship title at North Campus Soccer Field. Cape Fear finished regular season play at the top of the conference with an undefeated record overall (6-0 in conference play, 10-0-1 overall) and ultimately closed out Saturday afternoon's matchup to earn their third consecutive Region 10 Conference Championship title.

The Eagles took a defense-first approach to attempt to break down the Sea Devils' attacks early and often. While they managed to disrupt some solid attacking runs by the Sea Devils throughout the match with their sunken-back defensive structure, Cape Fear remained poised and patient as the team became more selective in finding the gaps in Wake Tech's setup.

While Wake Tech continued to fend off the Sea Devil offense throughout the match, Region 10 Player of the Year Maya McDonald placed a clutch header into the net with only seconds left to play to win it all for Cape Fear. Maya McDonald was also named Region 10 Women's Soccer Player of the Year for her outstanding impact on the conference this season.

"Each player played a pivotal role in us winning the game," remarks Head Coach C.W. Ponton. "I'm happy with how we maintained possession and composure throughout the game. We train for those late moments on a regular basis, so it was awesome to be able to put the game away in the final seconds."

"Now we focus on the District Tournament," says Ponton, eager to prepare the Sea Devils for the next round of tournament play. Cape Fear will host one last tournament matchup in post-season play as they take on the Region 8 Champions of Pensacola State for the South Atlantic District Championship title. This matchup will take place on Saturday, October 28th at 1 PM at North Campus Soccer Field.
