Holiday Tournament Proves To Be A Success For Lady Sea Devils

Bolivia, NC – (December 17-19, 2012) Entering their first ever Holiday Tournament, the Lady Sea Devils of Cape Fear Community College were eager to show the community what they were made of as they took on three highly competitive teams.  They did just that.  By winning two of their three games in this Holiday Tournament, the Sea Devils are able to go home and enjoy their families with smiles on their faces.   Coach Drake agrees, "The BCC Holiday Tournament was a great tournament for our ladies.  We overcame a lot to battle for a 2-1 record throughout this classic."

The Sea Devils emerged victorious in their first match-up against South Georgia Technical College by a score of 59-53.  With a season-low of 8 turnovers, the Sea Devils protected the basketball and ran a very patient and calculated offense.  Jordan Hill had a big game, recording another double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds.  She shot 73% from the free-throw line and almost 60% from the field.  Shelby Morris also scored in double digits, contributing 10 points.  Alex Washington quietly and effectively snatched five steals and grabbed seven rebounds to assist in the CFCC victory.

Game two didn't yield the same results as game one however.  CFCC fell short in a 58-49 loss to Harford CC from Bel Air, MD.  Shooting only 25% from the floor and 54% from the line, the Lady Sea Devils were unable to take advantage of their defensive surge in the second half.  Point guard Porsha Buchanan scored 12 points, had three assists, and five rebounds for her team.  Adding to a season high 41 rebounds were Shanta Williams with seven, Jordan Hill with nine, and Alex Washington with 10.

CFCC returned to the court with a vengeance in game three of the tournament as they fought back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to emerge victorious against the CC of Baltimore County-Dundalk by a score of 67-64.  After a furious battle of being behind the entire game, the Sea Devils took the lead with 42 seconds remaining.  With a patient offensive set, Alex Washington hit Jordan Hill on the block for an easy basket.  Their opponents were unable to score off of their next possession and after fouling Ashley Altman on the inbounds play, the CC of Baltimore County never scored again.  Jordan Hill and Wilmington native Shanta Williams both scored 18 points and combined for 10 rebounds.

The Lady Sea Devils will be back in action after the Holiday Break against an Australian travelling team at BCC on January 3rd.  Conference play will ensue on January 9th at CFCC's Schwartz Center for their one and only home game during the month of January.
