Sea Devils Dominating Early-Season Schedule

Sea Devils Dominating Early-Season Schedule

Wilmington – Coach Lori Drake's Cape Fear Community College Sea Devils women's basketball team has dominated its early-season non-conference schedule – winning the team's first five contests in resounding fashion.

The latest triumph occurred Sunday afternoon in a 90-70 victory over Clinton Junior College – the second victory over the weekend at the Schwartz Center. Drake's Sea Devils defeated Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday afternoon, 69-53.

"We got two great wins at home this weekend," an elated Drake said after the Clinton triumph. "We have got to continue the consistency of playing hard on every possession."

Drake looked ahead to the team's first conference game on December 3rd against Louisburg. "It's time to prepare," she noted.

However, the team is scheduled to play another non-conference encounter on Nov. 24th on the road at Bryant & Stratton.

Balanced scoring has been a characteristic of the young season.

There were four Sea Devils in double figures against Clinton with Kristina Rumplasch leading the way with 25 points, followed closely by Eboni Gilliam with 21 points. Shanta Williams pumped in 14 and Alexis Redd had 10.

Drake's team opened the season with an 84-36 blowout of Mount Olive before edging Hagerstown in a 60-54 win in the first round of the Louisburg Tourney. Prince George was the Sea Devils next victim in a 72-45 victory.

The Cape Fear coach also highlights players who assist scorers and puts emphasis on rebounding when it comes to statistics.

For example, in the Clinton victory Rumplasch also hit double figures on the boards with 11, followed by Gilliam with eight and Williams with four. She also had three steals.  Porsha Buchanan grabbed seven rebounds and 10 assists.

So as the season progresses, the Sea Devils continue to seek offensive balance and tenacious defense.
