Cape Fear Defeats Brunswick CC 3-1

Wilmington, NC - The Cape Fear volleyball team hosted Brunswick Community College at the Schwartz Center on Wednesday September 7th. With familiar faces filling the gym bleachers, the Sea Devils were ready for another win at home. In the first set, the teams went point for point, but Brunswick came out on top, defeating Cape Fear 22-25.

In game two, Cape Fear started off strong and sailed through the set defeating Brunswick 25-13. "Before the game, our warm-up wasn't focused and we weren't mentally with it," said freshman outside Jordan Gilmore. "We had a slow start to the game and we were playing not to lose. Then we just took it back to the basics and played Sea Devil volleyball." Gilmore finished the match contributing four kills and four blocks.

The Sea Devils went on to defeat BCC in the last two sets 25-22, and 25-21. "We had some rough spots in each game," said Pompeani. "Until we gain more experience playing teams like Brunswick, that will continue to happen. They are a great team and when we pushed, they pushed back."

Freshman libero Candice Downey finished the match with 12 digs. "This match really helped us learn how to push through in the time of need. There were a few spots in each match when we could have just shut down and let them go, but we didn't, and I am proud of the team," said Downey.

Jenna Baranowski lead the Sea Devils in attacks, contributing 8 kills and 2 service aces. Setter Casey Salchert finished the match with 22 assists, 16 digs and 4 kills of her own.
