Men’s Soccer Falls to Patriots

Score: CFCC 0, Patriots 3

Location: Castle Hayne, NC - North Campus Soccer Stadium

Record: 1-5-1

In Short: CFCC attempted to keep up with the Patriots in their backfield and generate momentum on attack, but were ultimately unable to recover and exited the pitch with a 0-3 deficit.

Highlights: The Sea Devils began the match with solid cohesion and passing combinations in midfield transition versus the Patrick Henry Patriots. However, the Patriots were able to capitalize on a few key opportunities on the attacking side of the ball and earned their first point via an own-goal by the Sea Devils. Shortly after, Sea Devils Goalkeeper Ethan James (Fr.) had to exit the pitch due to the return of concussion symptoms from his previous injury that was prompted during a diving save on the ground. With two goalkeepers sidelined due to injury - Matthew Baker (Fr.) still on injury reserve from the past weekend's match - utility player Josh Crisell (Soph.) re-entered the pitch at the goalkeeper position for the remainder of the match. While Crisell had a number of key saves given his sudden change of positioning on the field, the Patriots managed to earn two more goals to finish the match - one of which being a PK earned right before halftime. While Crisell and the defensive line persevered and managed to shut down many of the Patriots' attacking runs, the Sea Devils were not able to connect on the offensive side of the ball and put enough shots on-net needed to recover successfully.

"The whole back line put it in a very good shift today and on the attacking end Marcello Afonso put in a very positive performance for us," mentioned Assistant Coach Nate Torbett. "Despite the scoreline, I felt like Caleb Woodard and Ryland Hawksby were again very solid for us [in the backfield]."

"We didn't come into the game looking hungry at all," remarked Head Coach C.W. Ponton. "The loss of goalkeeper Ethan James in the first half didn't help, but back up Josh Crisell looked sound in goal and I can't fault him for either of the two he let in."

"A few mistakes and unlucky momentum shifts were the difference out there for us," says Assistant Coach Spencer Goodman. "The boys will be looking to recover and get their heads straight for our last two games of the regular season."

Up Next: CFCC has the weekend off to recoup and will resume travel next Wednesday, October 20 in Franklin, VA for their matchup with Camp Community College at 4:00 PM.
