Updated Record: 9-3

Score: Cape Fear 68, Brunswick 51

In Short: CFCC Women's Basketball defeats local Brunswick Dolphins at home as the Schwartz Center introduces new gameday sustainability features.

Sustainability Night:

The Sea Devils took the court for Sustainability Night presented by local waste-reduction nonprofit, Plastic Ocean Project, in efforts to educate fans on ways the Wilmington community can operate more sustainably - both on a personal level and as a collective. Sea Devils Athletics established 3 core sustainability goals in efforts to spread awareness and adopt more sustainable practices: Waste Reduction, Food Accessibility, and Community Health & Wellness.

The Athletic Department played host to various CFCC departments who had the opportunity to demonstrate their current sustainability initiatives with fans throughout the game. Cape Fear Community College's food pantry Ray's Tray, the Counseling Center in partnership with Coastal Horizons, the Marine Technology and Sustainable Technology programs, and Culinary Arts program in collaboration with "We Use Worms" were all in attendance to showcase their sustainable practices.

Thanks to the support of Plastic Ocean Project, the Schwartz Center has adopted a candy and snack wrapper recycling receptacle in conjunction with Terracycle to reduce overall concessions waste throughout the venue.

Game Highlights:

The Cape Fear Women's Basketball team got off to an early lead as they finished the First Quarter 24-14 against BCC. The Sea Devils achieved a 100% free throw percentage and totaled 7 rebounds accompanied by 4 blocks to solidify their presence early on.

Moving into the Second Quarter, Rashauna Grant took charge under the basket with 7 rebounds - as she totaled 15 by the end of the game. Although the Sea Devils were unable to finish on some key jumpers, Akyia King and Jada Nowlin stepped up totaling 5 defensive rebounds to give their teammates more opportunities to attack.

The Sea Devils let off the gas a bit in the Second Half and let the Dolphins gain momentum with 20 points in the Fourth Quarter alone. However, the Sea Devils were able to keep their lead and hold back the Dolphins enough to finish the game on top.

Cape Fear has experienced incredible improvement from the free throw line compared to previous matchups as they finished with above 80% made free throws as a team. While the team looks to establish stronger leads to extend all 4 Quarters against their coming opponents, the Sea Devils are excited for another win on their home court moving into February.

Up Next: The Sea Devils Women's Basketball team will travel to Hickory, NC to take on the Catawba Valley Red Hawks on Saturday, February 5th at 1 PM.
