Former Sea Devil stars Tavares Speaks and Vernon Payne highlight our Alumni Spotlight. Both these young men were instrumental in leading the Sea Devils to an 8th place national finish at the 2011 NJCAA National Tournament. Speaks finished his career with Cape Fear as a NJCAA 1st Team All-American, the first in school history. Payne highlighted his stellar career at CFCC at the 2011 National Tournament, as he was selected to the NJCAA National Tournament All-Tournament Team, also a first in Cape Fear history.
Tavares Speaks is now showcasing his talent at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Speaks, a 6'4 wing is in his senior campaign for the flames. Tavares currently ranks second on the team in points scored with 9.7 per contest, while grabbing 2.3 rebounds per game. This week Speaks led the flames into the Verizon Center in Washington, DC to battle perennial power Georgetown University. In a hard fought contest, Georgetown narrowly escaped Liberty 68-59. Tavares dumped in 12 points and grabbed 2 rebounds against the Hoyas. Speaks and Liberty are back in action Monday night in round two of the Legends Classic, as they travel to Huntsville, Texas for a tilt with UC Irvine. Games can be seen live on ESPN 3.
Vernon Payne is now leading the Tigers of Campbellsville University. Payne, a 6'6 forward played in his first game as a Tiger last night, helping lead Campbellsville to an upset of #9 Pikeville University. Vernon led his team in every statistical category, notching 25 points, 7 assists, grabbing 6 rebounds and blocking 5 shots. Payne leads Campbellsville back into action tomorrow night as UVA-Wise visits the Powell Athletic Center on the campus of Campbellsville University.
