Bolivia | In a battle between two of the top junior college basketball teams in the region, Brunswick Community College was able to pull away from Cape Fear Community College in overtime, winning 90-76.
Separated by 20 miles, the basketball rivalry between the two schools has a natural intensity. And both teams recognize that.
"Between us two, we've won three of the last four championships in the region," said Dolphins coach Walter Shaw. "Together we have changed the power structure of the entire region."
"I think it's the same as any other game, but you say that and you still know it's Brunswick-Cape Fear," added Sea Devils coach Ryan Mantlo. "It's always going to be a little bit bigger."
The Dolphins held a 36-29 advantage over Cape Fear in the first half, until the Sea Devils ended the half on a 9-2 run to tie the score at 38.
Landon Atterberry controlled the inside for Cape Fear during the first half, finishing with 15 points while continuously fighting through multiple double teams.
The score was close throughout the second half. Cape Fear held a five-point advantage with a little more than two minutes to go.
Brunswick tied the score at 73 with 20 seconds left when Khari Faison finished a tip-in off an inbounds pass from under the basket. After a tie-up was called with four seconds left, the Sea Devils were forced to take a contested 3-pointer that fell short, leading to overtime.
The Dolphins were able to press Cape Fear and successfully convert layups and dunks off Sea Devils turnovers, outscoring Cape Fear 17-3 in overtime.
