Women’s Soccer Won its Second Game of the Port City Classic

Wilmington, NC - Cape Fear women's soccer won its second game of the Port City Classic, defeating Oxford College of Emory University 5-1. Sophomores Janessa Annis and Sierra Raynor each scored a brace to lead the Sea Devils.

Raynor opened things up in the 4th minute, scoring the game's first goal thanks to an assist from sophomore Alaina Capps.

The game remained at 1-0 until the 24th minute when Annis made it 2-0 off an assist from freshman Carly Higgins. It was Higgins' lone assist of the game, and came a day after scoring four goals in yesterday's 9-1 victory over Stratford University.

The Eagles got a goal back in the 26th minute, as Sade Hanciles scored her team's only goal of the game. The two teams entered halftime with Cape Fear leading 2-1.

Head coach Ryan Deppa praised Oxford's gameplan, which prevented the Sea Devils from opening up a big lead in the first half.

"Oxford Emory had a solid game plan that kept us at bay for a decent amount of the game."

The Sea Devils made the right adjustments at halftime, however, and got on score sheet early in the second half. In the 47th minute, freshman Nina Perry made it 3-1 off an assist from Raynor. It was Perry's first goal of the season.

Raynor earned another assist roughly 10 minutes later, finding Annis for her second goal and the team's fourth. Raynor then capped things off in the 61st minute, scoring her second goal unassisted.

"It was nice to see our girls get it worked out for the second half and create more clean scoring opportunities," said coach Deppa.

Along with the better second half, Deppa was happy how his defensive backs prevented attacks from the Eagles, and started scoring opportunities.

"The backs did a great job for us changing the point of attack and limiting chances from Oxford Emory."

The win moves Cape Fear to 2-0 on the season. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, September 2nd, where they will face off against conference opponent Spartanburg Methodist on the road. Gametime is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
