The Sea Devils kick off their first scrimmage of the season against a competitive NCAA Division III opponent.
Highlights:
Cape Fear Women's Soccer traveled to Fayetteville, NC for a friendlty face off against the Methodist University Monarchs - hailing from the NCAA Division III USA South Conference. The Sea Devils stepped onto the pitch excited to play in an 11-aside game setting for the first time as a unit.
The Methodist Monarchs wasted no time in putting this new Sea Devils team to the test. The Monarchs were aggressive along the sidelines offensively and were able to connect along the back side of the Sea Devils' defensive line. Methodist also caught Cape Fear by surprise with their physicality on defense and their ability to connect passes quickly throughout the width of the pitch.
After taking a moment to adjust to the Monarch's offensive attacks, the Sea Devils were able to lock into their defensive structure and find beautiful moments of transition to keep the Monarchs honest on their defensive end. Freshmen Keeli Crisco and Emma Beehler were key game changers last night as they regained composure in the backfield and found their rhythm in keeping the Monarchs at bay.
The Sea Devils' attacking stride was ignited by Freshman Lauren Laux who stayed hungry on the attacking side of the ball and aided her teammates in major moments of transitional play.
Both Cape Fear goals came from Freshman Alyssa Wright in the second half of regulation play. Wright's highlight of the game was her second goal of the match - where she finessed a ball right over the keeper from about 22 yards out.
"It was a good outing by our ladies, especially since it's our first time stepping on the field in a game setting," remarks Head Women's Soccer Coach C.W. Ponton. "While we have some things to work on, this just shows the quality we can be."
