Sea Devils Force Tie With Shaw University Bears

In Short: The Sea Devils managed to recover from their 2-1 deficit in time to force a tie with the NCAA Division II Shaw University Bears.

Highlights:

Cape Fear Women's Soccer hosted the Shaw University Bears on Wednesday night for their first true home match on North Campus Soccer Field. While navigating the struggles of game cancellations and rescheduling due to weather, The Sea Devils were excited to step onto the field as a unit against an admirable NCAA opponent.

The Bears played a physical game and were able to use their athleticism to their advantage throughout. The Sea Devils attempted to force them to the sidelines throughout the match and in turn penetrated the middle gaps with some quick touches to engage the Cape Fear forward line with scoring opportunities.

The first goal of the match came from workhorse Freshman Lauren Laux with an assist from Freshman Alyssa Wright to put the Sea Devils up 1-0 in the first half. Returning Sophomore Jewelia Lindsey showcased her versatility as she spanned multiple positions on the field throughout to aid the Sea Devils.

The Sea Devils unfortunately entertained a few key defensive breakdowns towards the end of the first half as Shaw put in 2 goals for a 2-1 lead. Upon their return to the pitch for the second half, Freshman Halie Blizzard stepped up for a quick goal within the first minute of play - evening the score to 2-2.

Cape Fear managed to correct some of their initial defensive errors in the first half to hold off the Bears as the Sea Devil forward line attempted to tap in one more to end the game strong. CFCC was able to lock things down defensively and finish the match with a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation.

"I'm not disappointed in any way with the outing today, but I'm confident everyone within our team knows why we fell short this evening," says Head Women's Soccer coach C.W. Ponton. The Sea Devils look forward to utilizing this matchup as a learning opportunity moving into September.
