Volleyball Finishes 2-2 in Catawba Valley Classic

The Sea Devils traveled to Hickory, NC to compete in the Catawba Valley Invitational - where they faced multiple non-conference opponents that have tested their offensive strategy as well as their consistency on defense. They were able to finish out the weekend 

 

Friday, October 1st

 

CFCC vs. St. Johns River State College - 4PM

Score: CFCC 0, St. Johns River 3 (13-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-11, 8-15)

 

Highlights: The Sea Devils were caught off guard pretty early in the match with SJR winning both sets fairly quickly. However, they were able to regain composure and fight for a close win in the 3rd set. The 4th set came and went very smoothly as the Sea Devils worked cohesively as an offensive unit. After forcing a 5th set against SJR, the Sea Devils fought hard but ultimately were not able to recover enough to regain control of the match before losing the final set at 15.

 

Grace Pulido (Fr.) served as a defensive MVP with 30 total digs, while Isa Yedo  (Fr.) and Kara Walker (Fr) lead the charge on the offensive with a total of 22 kills between the two.

 

CFCC vs. Lurleen B. Wallace - 5:30 PM

Score: CFCC 3, LBW 0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-17)

 

Highlights: After an extensive match and tough loss minutes before, the Sea Devils needed to refocus and quickly move on to take on LBW. In this matchup, they were able to control the tempo throughout and hone in on the areas defensively where they were lacking in the previous game. With increased team communication and regaining their focus as a unit, the Sea Devils were able to earn a quick 3-0 sweep and finish their evening of play with a 1-1 tournament record.

 

Hannah McDowell (Fr.) served as a valuable team player totaling 17 assists. Mya Klein (Fr.) also supported her teammates well throughout the match with 17 assists and 5 aces.

 

Saturday, October 2nd

 

CFCC vs. Lake Sumter - 10:30 AM

Score: CFCC 1, Lake Sumter 3 (25-20, 10-25, 17-25, 20-25)

 

Highlights: The Sea Devils started off relatively strong to begin Day 2 of the Catawba Valley Invitational with a hard-fought 1st set win over Lake Sumter. However, the offense lost their rhythm moving into Set 2 and were unable to resync as the match went on. The Sea Devils battled it out in the 4th and final Set to keep the LakeHawks honest and earn their 25 to close the match.

 

AB Averett (Fr.) finished the match with 9 kills, while Naomi Pegues (Soph.) earned 12 digs in attempts to keep the Sea Devils afloat.

 

CFCC vs. Catawba Valley - 1:30 PM

Score: CFCC 3, Catawba Valley 1 (16-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22)

 

Highlights: After a tough start to Day 2 of the tournament, the Sea Devils rallied together and were eager to redeem themselves. Catawba Valley definitely kept the Sea Devils honest in the 1st Set and established that they would need to work hard if they wanted to earn a win this afternoon. But the Sea Devils rose to the occasion and called upon their communication and teamwork across the board to clinch all 3 sets in a row to finish the match.

 

Charly Meade (Fr.) and Kara Walker (Fr.) finished the match with 10 kills each while AB Averett (Fr.) topped it off with 12 kills to end CFCC tournament play for the weekend.

 

Head Coach Colby Rosser remarks, "So proud of us for bouncing back against CVCC and showing a true, concentrated team effort. Great win."
