Womens Basketball Finishes Home Opener On Top

Wilmington, NC (November 6th, 2023) - Cape Fear Women's Basketball opened up their season with the 3rd Annual Carly Rae Classic tournament in memory of Women's Basketball Alumni Carly Rae Barron. The tournament featured a video tribute to Carly and all ticket and concessions proceeds contributing to the development of a scholarship endowment in her honor. The Sea Devils defeated both of their opponents to put them at 2-0 to kick off their season.

With many players on the squad starting the season on the sidelines due to injuries, the Sea Devils knew that they had to play smart, diligent basketball to persevere through both games with minimal substitutions.

Jaci Bolden controlled the tempo throughout both games in her point guard role as she made hard drives to the basket through walls of defenders - drawing fouls and leading the team in total points.

Khauri Little's patience and anticipation paid off as she led the team in steals throughout both games and played a major role in Cape Fear's fast breaks.

Jaylah Henderson made her mark, especially in Friday's matchup vs USC Salkehatchie, where her determination under the basket and aggression in the paint helped hold their lead in the second half.

Kelly Holmgren drained three 3-pointers in a row during Saturday's matchup vs Denmark Tech, while Demya Chisholm held down the fort with her communication and energy on defense.

Jael Poole brought the necessary energy off the bench to disrupt the flow of their opponents offensively and defensively throughout both games.

After two long games with a short staff of players healthy enough to compete, the team is in high spirits and very pleased with the wins they were able to pull out through playing intentional and well-rounded basketball throughout the weekend.

"This is a good first showing for our completely new roster of freshmen," remarks Head Coach Taylor Todd-Williams. "We have a few things we'd like to clean up moving forward, but all in all we have overcome a lot in order to finish the way we did this weekend."

Cape Fear Women's Basketball will host again tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7th, as they take on Fayetteville Tech at 5 PM in the Joe & Barbara Schwartz Center.
