Sea Devils Split Day One

Hickory, NC - Cape Fear Community College suffered its first setback of the season on Friday night as the Sea Devils split a pair of conference matches on day one of the Region 10 Extravaganza in Hickory. Coming off a straight set 3-0 sweep over Pitt Community College, Cape Fear dropped a hard fought 3-1 contest to Catawba Valley.

"It was a great way to start the night as Pitt did not roll over after we took the first two sets," said CFCC Coach Emily Coleman. "They forced us to play clean volleyball, which is what we need, so we can continue to move forward.

Bailey Toman led the attack with 12 kills while Tressa Amico added with eight kills and eight blocks in the result.

After taking the first set in game two, Catawba Valley rallied over the next two frames and held off a late charge by the Sea Devils to secure the match with a 30-28 win in the fourth set.

"We were challenged so much by Catawba," Coleman added. "We jumped out on top first, fell behind the next two sets, but refused to give up in the fourth. I'm proud of our fight. This was truly a learning experience for us as a team."

Toman finished with 10 kills and nine digs in the second match, while Faryn Salazar had 27 assists to go along with 19 digs from Chelsea Bailey and 20 digs from Rachel Braunsweig.

Cape Fear CC fell to 3-1 overall and wrap up play with matches against Surry Community College and Guilford Tech on Saturday.
