Men's Soccer Season Ends

Wilmington, NC - Competing among some of the top junior college programs in the country, the Cape Fear Community College men's soccer team saw their season come to an end in the opening round of the Region 10 Tournament following a 4-0 setback against Richard Bland College.

With 16 first-year players on the roster, the Sea Devils closed the season 6-9-3 overall and 3-8-3 in conference.

"We've got some good guys that will be returning for us next year that made some big contributions for us when our backs against the wall late in the year," said CFCC Coach Chris Libert. "Over the last few weeks we basically played every other day and while it was tough to get the wins, it's a good foundation for being successful for these young men in the years to come."

Sophomore Andrew Goodman led the team with 10 goals and earned second-team All-Region 10 honors. Freshman defender Andrew Barton and second-year midfielder Stefano Proietti-Fehrenbach also received honorable mention following a vote by the league's coaches.

Port City product Franco Fernandez recorded three assists in his rookie season to finish tied for second on the team with seven points.

"I'm real happy for our boys to get recognized against some of the elite in our region," Libert added.

Cape Fear opened the year 5-1-1, but dropped five straight, including a pair of matches against top-ranked Louisburg College. The Sea Devils had trouble rebounding heading through the Monday of October as the team played their final nine games over a period of 18 days.

"We just never had enough time to get ourselves back to full health," Libert said. "It definitely put us in a position where it was tough to get our team into shape, but you play the games and just unfortunate we weren't able into that top four in conference."
