Sea Devils Men's Soccer Earns First Win of the Season

Lancaster, SC - The Cape Fear Men's Soccer team kicked off their season with a 1-0 victory over USC Lancaster.

The Sea Devils took the lead off a Lancaster own goal in the first half, after a shot by sophomore Andrew Phillips deflected off of a defender's back and into the goal. Goalkeeper Alex Gedrys also registered his first clean sheet of the season.

Head coach C.W. Ponton noted room for improvement, but was pleased with his team's overall performance. "We executed our game plan extremely well, but we still have a lot of room to improve." In particular, Ponton praised the play of sophomore defender Cristian Calderon for his "solid defense and support on offense."

Ponton also hailed the effort the Sea Devils put in during preseason leading up to today's win. "I'm extremely proud of our guys for all the hard work that they've provided to this point. But this is only the beginning."

With the win, Cape Fear moved to 1-0 to start the season. Their next game will be Saturday, September 3rd, at 4 p.m., at Legion Stadium.
