CFCC Men's Soccer Season Ends

Spartanburg, SC - Cape Fear men's soccer lost to Spartanburg Methodist 8-0 in Wednesday's play-in game for the Region 10 conference tournament.

"[I'm] extremely disappointed in my team," said head coach C.W. Ponton afterwards. "We had horrible intensity from the beginning, [a] serious lack of communication, and no self-pride to stop allowing the opponent to score. [It was] not the way we should have performed in the playoffs."

Despite the score line, freshman Martin Zambrano managed to make 11 saves in the game.

Wednesday's loss marked the end of the season for the Sea Devils. They finished with an overall record of 3-13, and a conference record of 3-12.

Three players -- Brian Leite, Alfredo Martinez, and Pedro Ugarte -- tied for most goals with two apiece. Alan Sanchez and Keaton Simmons both led the team in assists, finishing with two.

While goalkeeper Alex Gedrys was the only keeper to earn a shutout (finishing with two), Zambrano led the team in minutes played (862:22), and finished with the highest save percentage on the team at 70.9.

Wins were hard to come by, but Cape Fear did manage to win twice over conference opponent USC Lancaster, defeating them on the road in the first game of the season, 1-0, and then later at home 3-0, in what was their most impressive win of the season. In all three of Cape Fear's wins, the team managed a shutout.

The Sea Devils had a young team this season, with only five sophomores --  Alex Gedrys, Brian Leite, Andrew Barton, Cristian Calderon, and Lennon-McCartney Barrier -- and many of its top performers were freshman. While the team struggled at times this season, the team could potentially return next season with a more experienced group of players.
