Cape Fear Women's Soccer Continues to Dominate

Wilmington, NC - Cape Fear women's soccer continued their dominance in conference play, defeating Wake Tech Community College 6-1.

The Sea Devils pressed high to start the match, pressuring the Eagles into turning the ball over. It led to a shot on goal within the first minute of the game.

As the opening minutes of the half wore on, Wake Tech would maintain a bit of possession, but they would be unable to create any scoring opportunities.

Cape Fear struggled to create scoring chances as well, finding it difficult to string passes together. As a result, Wake Tech begin pressing further into Cape Fear's final third.

Their pressure would pay off, as the Eagles would take the lead in the 20th minute off a penalty kick, after freshman defender Celine Jacobi Barham would be called for a handball in the box.

The Sea Devils would respond well, tying the game two minutes later. Sophomore Alyssa Coustenis would be played open on goal, and place her shot past the goalkeeper.

From that point, Cape Fear would pressure Wake Tech into their own third. They would create a chance on goal, but would be unable to take the lead.

The game was at a stalemate for much of the first half. Cape Fear held more possession, but Wake Tech did a good job defending.

Towards the end of the half, the Sea Devils' pressure finally paid off. Earning a free kick in the 39th minute, freshman Anna Massengill would curl a shot past the goalkeeper to give them a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

The Sea Devils played much better in the second half. Five minutes in, Coustenis almost scored the team's third, but her shot would ricochet off the top cross bar and over the goal.

Sophomore Emily Valenti would eventually make it 3-1 in the 55th minute. Valenti was happy with her performance. "I feel like I played all right, I handled the ball well in the middle."

Controlling the match from that point, Cape Fear would continue applying pressure in search of more goals. Freshman Alaina Capps would score Cape Fear's fourth in the 63rd minute. She would dribble past the defenders, and bury a shot in the bottom left corner of the goal.

Sophomore Miranda Oliver would make it 5-1 in the 75th minute. Freshman Briley Eason would provide the assist, setting up Oliver open in front of goal. Oliver would put a lot of power in her shot, pushing it over the keeper's head.

In the 81st minute, sophomore Emily Bessey scored Cape Fear's sixth and final goal of the game. She would be assisted by sophomore Amanda Doherty. It was Bessy's first goal of the season.

Head coach Ryan Deppa was happy in the way his team played after playing so many games in the past few days. "Being our third game in four and a half days, I thought the girls brought enough just to get the job done. Sometimes that's all it's about."

Valenti echoed her coach. "We played really well, because we played a game yesterday, less than 18 hours ago."

With this weekend's games behind them, Deppa says it's all about getting ready for Tuesday's game. "Now we have to very quickly recover from a bunch of injuries, and get ready for a game on Tuesday against Spartanburg."

Sunday's win moves Cape Fear to 12-1 on the season, and 9-1 in conference.

Tuesday's game against Spartanburg Methodist will be played at 2:00 p.m. at Legion Stadium.
