Sea Devil Women's Basketball Readies for 2016 Brunswick CC Christmas Classic

 

 

WILMINGTON, NC--- The Sea Devil Women's Basketball program will hit the hardwood this weekend for a three day tournament hosted by Brunswick Community College. The "2016 Brunswick CC Christmas Classic" will run from December 15-December 17, with Cape Fear Community College playing in three games in the tournament from Thursday to Saturday. 

Cape Fear is coming off two road wins in their South Carolina road trip this past weekend, where they defeated Clinton Junior College (78-75) on Saturday afternoon led by Desaree Green, TaKwana Bland, Destiny Campbell, and Taylor Foulks. Green finished as the leading scorer with 20 points, Bland finished with 14 points, Campbell added 13 points, and Foulks scored 12 points. The Sea Devils would shoot 42.6% from the field (29-68) in their win over the Golden Bears. With that win over Clinton Junior College, the Sea Devil Women's Basketball program improved to (6-2) overall and (4-0) in Region 10 Conference play and are the winners of six straight; with their last loss coming against Wallace State CC-Hanceville on November 13. 

On Sunday, the Sea Devils would return to the floor and play against Spartanburg Methodist College. Cape Fear would come out with a (81-61) win over the Pioneers; improving the all-time series to (6-0) with Sea Devil Women's Basketball program winning every match-up between the two schools in series history. Cape Fear came out with the win with strong performances by TaKwana Bland, Desaree Green, Destiny Campbell, and Nikia Wallace.

The Sea Devil Women's Basketball program will enter this week's tournament with a (7-2) overall record and a (5-0) record in Region 10 Conference play.  During their six game winning streak, the Sea Devils have outscored their opponents (460-406), including five road wins and one home win. 

Headed into the tournament, sophomore guard TaKwana Bland leads the team in scoring at 13.8ppg, sophomore forward Desaree Green leads the team in rebounding at 9.3/game, while TaKwana Bland also leads the squad in 3-Pointer% at 28.9%, and Desaree Green leads the team at 56.2 FG%. 

The Sea Devils have a handful of role players to watch in the tournament as well; freshman forward/center Taylor Foulks (6-1) is averaging 8.3ppg and 6.9rpg in 7.8 minutes/game, sophomore guard Nikia Wallace (5-8) is averaging 4.6ppg on 33.3 FG% in 9.9 minutes/game, freshman forward/center Ari Young (6-2) is averaging 3.7ppg on 4.1rpg and 1.6bpg in 12.4 minutes/game, and freshman guard Shanekia Jackson (5-10) is averaging 3.2ppg in 8.2 minutes/game.

I am excited to be a part of this tournament and I look forward to seeing my team grow over the next three days of play," said Sea Devil Women's Basketball head coach Lori Drake in her pre-tournament presser leading up to tomorrow's game versus Caldwell Community College

Cape Fear will begin the tournament on Thursday afternoon in a match-up versus (2-8) overall, Caldwell Community College a Division I/Region 10 Conference opponent. Players to watch on the Cobras are: (5-6) freshman guard Malarie Tallent- 13.2ppg in 33.3 minutes/game, freshman forward (5-9) Malikah Myers- 10.2ppg and 3.6rpg in her 27.4 mins/game, and freshman guard (5-5) Destiny Marley- 9.3ppg and 1.7apg in 28.9 minutes/game. 

Cape Fear will then match-up versus (4-8) overall, Delaware Technical Community College on Friday afternoon, a Division II/Region 19 Conference opponent led by ninth-year head coach Jim Kane. Players to watch on Delaware Tech's roster are: freshman guard Taylor Davis-13.4ppg, freshman guard Janaya Taylor-10.8ppg, and sophomore forward Aayla Mercante-10.2ppg and 9.6rpg. 

The Sea Devils will close out the tournament on Saturday morning vs Combine Academy; Cape Fear defeated Combine Academy earlier this season in their season home opener where they were able to come out with the (71-51) victory. In that game, the Sea Devils were led by Destiny Campbell's 18 points and Desaree Green's 10 points, while as a team shot 45.1% from the field and 71.4% from the line, while holding Combine Academy to just 25.8% from the field and 18.8% on three pointers.
